Reader,
Summer can be tough on natural hair (winter isn't the only drying season!). Between the heat, humidity, and extra time spent outdoors, it’s easy for dryness and breakage to sneak in when you least expect. Yes, even when you think your hair is protected.
In this issue, we’re focusing on how to make your protective styles actually work for you. With the right prep and care (especially at night), you can keep your hair healthy, moisturized, and continuing to grow strong all season long. Read up!

💡 QUICK CROWN TIP
Moisturize and seal thoroughly before installing any protective style.
It’s tempting to rush the prep, especially when you're doing your hair late at night or just ready to get it done. But skipping this step is skipping the actual protection part. Your strands need to be bathed in moisture before being tucked away.

🙌🏼 TREASURE THIS
The Part of Protective Styling No One Talks About: Nighttime Care
It’s easy to think that once your protective style is installed, the hard work is done. But ask anyone who’s had to cut off dry, brittle ends after a long-term style. The true test is in how you care for your hair while it’s tucked away, especially at night.
Nighttime is when your strands are most vulnerable to drying out. If you allow it to rub on drying cotton, leave it exposed to the indoor A/C, or simply leave your hair unattended for days on end, your style might still look good. However, what’s happening beneath the style tells the real story.
Here’s how to keep your strands nourished while you sleep:
- Set a nighttime routine.
This looks like attending to your scalp and your ends. Add a few drops of moisture on your scalp or ends, followed by putting on a satin bonnet or scarf. If you’re tired, this takes no longer than 2 minutes. You don’t need to do this daily. How dry your hair gets will determine.
- Choose products that work while you’re sleeping.
The Kerastase Nutritive 8H Magic Night Serum is a perfect choice. It nourishes overnight without making your style greasy or weighed down. Just applying a little from mid-shaft through your ends before bed makes a big difference over time, especially if you plan to keep your style in for weeks.
- Protect from friction.
Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase. Always. Even if you wrap your hair. It’s double protection for your strands and minimizes frizz, dryness, and snags.
Remember, a protective style should support your hair, not give you more problems later. And sometimes, the most powerful part of your routine is the one that happens while you sleep.

🙏 SELAH MOMENT
Proverbs 24:3 –“By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established.”
Your hair care is no different. Build with wisdom, not trends. Protect it intentionally, and let understanding guide the styles you choose this season.
