Your Weekly Guide to Growing in Faith & Natural Hair Care

Hey Reader!

I held off on sending yesterday's newsletter because, well today is National Ponytail Day. No seriously. I don't, nor am I able to make this kind of stuff up. πŸ˜‚

Sometimes you have to laugh at the "days" people choose to make up a "holiday." What I do like about these fake faux holidays is that they can be fun, but it's really what you put into it. So, in honor of today being deemed National Ponytail Day, I've decided to talk all things ponytails!

Also, starting with next week's newsletter, I'm making some changes to better serve you. You'll notice some new sections, and we'll cover something fresh and new each week. Now, about those ponytails....

Ponytail Perfection Tips

The ponytail isn't just a quick fix for hairstyles gone bad. It's a style in and of itself that can be done in ways that make it:

  • Sleek and stylish
  • Messy and effortless
  • Fun and flirty

Achieving the "perfect" ponytail is about technique. And, "perfect" is definitely subjective. Here are tips to help you do the "best" ponytail for YOU:

  • Always work with moisturized hair. Dry hair leads to breakage

  • Detangle with fingers first and a large-tooth comb, and the edge of a large boar bristle brush. Anti-breakage tip: No need to run the brush all the way through.

  • Choose the right band to secure your pony. Snag-free bands with no metal or seams are best: seamless elastics, statin or silk scrunchies, spiral coil holders (the ones that look like the old school telephone cords)

  • For fuller ponytails, use one of these 2 techniques:
    • The stacked ponytail - it's essentially 2 ponytails really close together, 1 on top of the other
    • Claw-clipped ponytail - Create one high ponytail. Split it in half vertically and use a medium-sized claw clip (or smaller depending on your length) to clip the center. Then, fan the top section over the bottom
  • Polish it up. Smooth your edges and the perimeter of your hair with a flexible hold pomade or edge control. Ditch heavy gels, which create too much "crunch."
  • Maintain. Tie your ponytail down with a satin or silk scarf at night to maintain moisture and prevent frizz. This will also give you two and three-day hair.
